The cranes are still visible in the skyline above the construction site near the Danube. When the first residents move into the "Vitalis Seniorenhaus" retirement home in just a few months, they should feel safe in the knowledge that they are going to get all the care and support they need every step of the way. This progressive housing concept, equipped with fittings from Hager subsidiary Locate Solution, offers precisely the level of care and comfortable living each resident needs and desires at any given time. The forward-looking approach of the retirement home in Kelheim, Lower Bavaria, offers a promising insight into the kinds of technologies that will allow more and more elderly people and those dependent on care to enjoy an independent yet safe lifestyle in the future.
"An combination of all kinds of housing for the elderly is currently under construction in Kelheim. The interplay of technology and assistance in the homes help residents gain a sense of a security in their living environment," explains Jürgen Hofmann, who is responsible for the project at Locate Solution. Along with 46 modern apartments, Kelheim will also be home to a day-care centre, a shared accommodation initiative with single rooms for the elderly and two shared homes for the elderly suffering from dementia, each with 12 apartments. All apartments can benefit from assistance, care and support services provided by EUSTRA if required. The apartments are also all fitted with to receive AAL safety components, which can be installed and activated as needed. The safety components include intelligent emergency call devices, telemedicine applications, 'my.night.nurse' (an alarm system that notifies carers in case of an emergency) the modular stove monitoring unit 'my.cook.guard' and 'my.connect', a protective system for people who can become disoriented.
The rooms in the assisted living facilities and the apartments for elderly people can also be fitted with AAL systems such as negative motion detectors, sensor mats, brightness sensors and temperature sensors. These are all technologies that give those in need of help a greater sense of security and allow them to enjoy a safer living environment. Any future residents moving to Kelheim also know that care can be provided at home within their own four walls should they become ill or find themselves increasingly in need of assistance.
"The promise we make is that anyone who moves into our facilities will never have to move out again," explains Sebastian Wendlinger, CEO of EUSTRA Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH. This promise is obviously well received among members of the target group. In September 2015, just six months after the start of the construction work, 90 per cent of the apartments had already been sold. The innovative retirement home should be ready for its first residents by the end of June 2016. Alongside the Locate Solution technologies integrated into the facilities, future residents can also look forward to the benefits of door communication systems from Hager and switches from the Berker S.1 series. Although features like these cannot prevent the struggles of old age, this kind of living environment can help make the twilight years of life as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
