Intelligent Packaging

Intelligent Packaging

Following comprehensive analyses and improvements to our packaging concept, we greatly reduced raw materials and energy required for our packaging in 2010. Some of this was achieved by very simple measures. For example, we decided to reduce the printed area on new packaging from 60 to less than 10 per cent. Our printing ink is now water-based, environmentally friendly and solvent-free. By using certain types of corrugated cardboard and sophisticated designs, we were able to use less materials, by around 20 per cent. Moreover, we have completely changed the nature of our packaging material:

  • 100 per cent recycled paper: as of 2010 we stopped used packaging paper containing fresh fibres. All of our packaging materials are now made of recycled raw materials.
  • 100 per cent mono-material: all of our packaging is free of composite materials. As a result, they can be fed back into the raw material life cycle once they are no longer required without having to endure a laborious separation process.
  • 100 per cent brown paper: by switching from white to brown cover paper we have made chemical bleaching agents and coating colours redundant and considerably lowered the energy needed for production and recycling.
