The Peter and Luise Hager-Foundation promotes therapeutic riding in Portugal

Associação Hípica Terapêutica (AHT) started operating in Cascais in 1989, which is located near Portugal capital – Lisbon, and is now a registered Portuguese charity.

The charity’s aim is to provide horse riding and hipotherapy activities for handicapped children and adolescents in order to exploit their maximum physical and mental potential.

Herefore the  Peter and Luise Hager-Foundation supports four riders and their horses. Currently over 80 riders from institutions and schools benefit from therapeutic horse riding every week. They are taught the basic riding skills which lead to improved posture, balance, flexibility as well as an increased awareness and self-confidence.

These skills can be aquired in a country club (Real Clube de Campo D. Carlos I, Areia, Cascais) which provides a custom built indoor school with a mounting ramp and platform, four well trained horses and five stables. About 25 volunteers are present to assist the riders. The therapeutic team responsible for implementing the riding plan is made up of a riding instructor, a physiotherapist, occupational therapists and teachers.
