Major industry award for Dr. Oswald Hager

Blieskastel, 18th November 2014

Major industry award for Dr. Oswald Hager –  Hager Group founder honoured for lifetime achievement

Hager Group founder honoured for lifetime achievement Almost six decades ago Dr. Oswald Hager, his father Peter and brother Hermann founded a company that would later become one of the top players in the industry. Last week ZVEH, the most prominent German industry association, presented Dr. Hager, now 87, with an award in recognition of his lifetime achievement.

At a formal gala event on 31st October 2014 in Mainz, Germany, the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trade (ZVEH) presented its E-Markenpreis award. The E-Marke (e-brand) community promotes quality, customer orientation and outstanding service in Germany’s electrical trade and is currently supported by around 7,000 electrical trade businesses and partner companies in industry, wholesale and the insurance sector. Each year the community presents its award in recognition of outstanding commitment to the electrical trade and in turn, the principles that characterise this industry.

‘This year’s award winner has established a connection to us as a brand trade partner that is so strong it seems set to last for centuries,’ commented Lothar Hellmann, ZVEH’s Vice-President, in his laudatory speech. ‘Hager advises and supports our guild member businesses in a manner that is truly unique.

’ Without a doubt, Dr. Oswald Hager is one of the prominent entrepreneurs who have set standards in the European electrical installations market. In 1955 he joined forces with his father and brother to establish ‘Hager oHG, elektrotechnische Fabrik’ in Ensheim in the Saarland region. In the 1980s Hager Group gradually developed into a full-service provider for electrical installations in buildings. Today, the German business publication Wirtschaftsblatt ranks it 101st out of the 500 largest family-run businesses in the country. The company owes its size, but above all its significance, to the efforts of Dr. Hager in particular. Thank you, Oswald Hager!

Hager Group continues its sustainable commitment to the United Nations’ Global Compact

On 26th June 2014 Hager Group went online with the 2014 edition of the Communication on Progress (COP) report for the United Nations’ Global Compact.

Snehalaya Education Society, travellers’ community, TAI community, blood donation camps and Toastmasters Clubs, HagerGO! survey, ISO certifications, Eco-Awards, Peter-und-Luise-Foundation and electrical mobility initiatives are just some of the many examples to be found in Hager Group’s 2014 edition of the Communication on Progress report for the United Nations Global Compact. This rapport illustrates the company’s continued commitment to its employees, customers and the environment in which people live and work. This report has just been published on the United Nations’ website.

It was in April 2007 that Hager Group first signed up to the United Nations Global Compact, the voluntary business initiative supervised by the United Nations to foster Corporate Social Responsibility. Change on Hager Group’s Supervisory Board

Blieskastel, 25th June 2014

Change on Hager Group’s Supervisory Board

Two new faces and a change at the top: those were the decisions made at Hager SE’s (societas europaea) annual general meeting, which was held today at the company’s headquarters in Blieskastel.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Lorz and Antoine Raymond were elected as new members of the Supervisory Board.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Lorz is a lawyer and a partner in the law firm Hennerkes, Kirchdörfer & Lorz. He specialises primarily in the field of advising family-run companies on commercial and company-law issues. He is also an honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart and a member of various advisory councils and supervisory boards at large German family-run companies. He has authored numerous specialist publications.

Antoine Raymond is chairman of the internationally successful automotive parts supplier ARaymond Group. As the great-great-grandson of the company’s founder, he represents the fifth generation of management at the family-run company, which, like Hager Group, has Franco-German roots. With 22 production sites on five continents and a workforce of 5,000, the ARaymond Group is the market leader in Europe and occupies second place at global level. Antoine Raymond has worked in various positions within the family company since 1987. He is also advisor for Banque de France (Bank of France) and president of the metallurgical industry federation l'UDIMEC (Union des industries métallurgique electriques et connexes de l’Isère).

“We are delighted that in Prof. Dr. Rainer Lorz and Antoine Raymond, we have recruited two new supervisory board members who are extremely familiar with the interests and challenges of a family-run company,” emphasised Daniel Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Hager Group. “We are very much looking forward to working with them in the future.”

In the course of this change in the senior management, Dr. Kurt Schlotthauer and Prof. Dr. Dr. Brun-Hagen Hennerkes leave the Supervisory Board on age-related grounds. To this effect, Dr. Kurt Schlotthauer, who can look back on 23 years of service on the Supervisory Board, is stepping down from the chairmanship. The new chairman will be Günther Fleig, who has been a member since 2011. With Günther Fleig as chairman and the two new members on board, Hager Group is effecting a change of generations at Supervisory Board level as well. The group is thus in the process optimising its position to deal with upcoming challenges.

The two partners Evi Hager (vice president) and Philip Hager were confirmed in their positions, as was Christian Buchel.

The partners warmly thank Dr. Schlotthauer and Prof. Dr. Dr. Hennerkes for their many years of commitment, which have had a crucial influence on the company’s development over the past few years.

From energy-efficient housing to smart grid

Blieskastel, 3th April 2014.

Hager Group dynamises the energy transition

On 21st March more than 100 energy specialists from France and Germany attended a conference at Hager Group’s main site in Obernai, Alsace, devoted to the highly topical theme of “Smart Grid - an essential tool for the energy transition”. The event was hosted by the engineering associations VDI (in Germany) and Arisal (in France) and provided an opportunity for experts from both of these neighbouring countries to discuss what tomorrow’s energy system will look like. It was only fitting that the conference should be held on Hager Group premises, given that, with its many research projects, pilot tests and pioneering energy management systems, the Franco-German family business is one of the most important drivers of the energy transition currently taking place in Europe.

Energy-efficiency construction, Blieskastel
A concrete example of Hager Group’s commitment to change is its new 3,000m2 Research and Application Centre in Blieskastel. Opened during Autumn 2013, the building was designed as a kind of high-efficiency power plant, capable, all year round, of generating at least two thirds of its energy needs. Solar panels on the roof produce electricity from the sun’s energy, a high-efficiency combined heat and power unit in the basement is used to convert gas into heat and electricity and the generated energy is stored in a 100 kWh buffer. The heart and brains of the building, however, are an innovative energy management system, which with photovoltaic technology, combined heat and power unit and public electricity distribution network not only coordinate three energy sources simultaneously, but also act as a weather station and calculate the building’s energy requirements. Some 5,000 data points spread throughout the building record each individual user’s energy consumption in real time and feed the data into the calculation model of the management system Hager Group has developed with its partners. This means energy generation can be increasingly balanced with consumption and in a few years from now it may be possible to disconnect the building from the public energy distribution network completely. Already, according to predictions, it should take less than five years to amortise the €1.6 million invested in the energy concept and management system.

Promising pilot projects in France and Germany
Before long, this exceptional building in Blieskastel should become a model for many more energy efficiency projects. Hager Group is currently working to install similar energy management systems in several hundred private and commercial buildings in both France and Germany. The first Saarland households should be kitted out before the end of the year as part of a large-scale field trial and a similar pilot test is already under way in France. At the beginning of April 2014, Hager Group is presenting its system to the public for the first time when it attends Light+Building in Frankfurt, the world’s biggest trade fairdealing with energy-efficiency.

Smart grids for tomorrows energy systems
The question is, how can such model solutions be connected up in a large-scale sustainable energy supply network? What else needs to be done to make headway in the energy transition? It is questions like these that Hager Group experts are currently examining in Saarland in the context of a ground-breaking project. With the “Saarland regional energy innovation initiative”, energy suppliers, research institutes, end users and industrial firms like Hager Group have joined forces to form a network so that, together, they can explore completely new solutions and put them into practice as models on a local level. The significance of the project extends far beyond the regional borders of Saarland. It is expected that this model for future energy supply will provide the necessary impetus for re-dynamising the energy transition in Germany and far beyond.

Huge savings potential for residential and commercial buildings
The need for new dynamism was the subject of broad consensus among the experts attending the “Smart Grid” conference, who were welcomed by, among others, Daniel Hager, CEO of Hager Group. Johannes Hauck from Hager Group Corporate Business Development gave a presentation on the enormous savings potential of “smart” buildings. According to him, “Buildings account for over 40% of energy consumption. With smart networks, intelligent communication systems, and efficient energy storage devices, future buildings will be able to cover a large share of their energy needs themselves throughout the year.”

One thing is already clear: Hager Group already plays an energetic key role in this field.

Hermann Hager has passed away

Hermann Hager, one of the great entrepreneurial personalities of the post-war period,
has died at the age of 85.

In Hermann Hager, the state of Saarland, as well as neighbouring France, has lost one of its great entrepreneurial personalities. Herman Hager, who was born in Ensheim in 1928 and lived in Obernai, Alsace, with his family for many years, described himself as a resident of France by choice.

As a businessman, he demonstrated a transnational manner of thought and action for decades. In 1955, the brothers Hermann and Oswald Hager, together with their father Peter, founded Hager oHG, elektrotechnishe Fabrik in Ensheim. In the mid-1950s, after he had completed his studies at engineering college in Bingen and passed his examination as a mechanical engineer, the factory grounds in Ensheim became the nucleus of what is now the globally-active Hager Group. Hermann and his brother complemented each other from the start. Hermann the technician and Oswald the businessman were ideally equipped to prevail in the tough competitive struggle within the industry. The selective acquisition of further companies and their skilful integration into the group culminated in Hager becoming the leader in the field of electrical installation solutions in the structural engineering sector.

After the Saarland became integrated into the Federal Republic of Germany, the foundation of Hager in Obernai, Alsace, in 1959 was the deliberate and obvious step towards setting up a second strategic pillar. Right up until his retirement, Hermann headed the French company as président directeur géneral.

The decision to cross the border to Obernai, where Hermann Hager is an honorary citizen and lived with this family for a number of years, marked the beginning of his strong ties to Alsace, which lasted until the end of his life. He often described himself as French, having adopted France as his home country and he invited friends and business associates to his hotel “A la Cour d’Alsace”, which he opened in 1987, whenever the opportunity arose.
1959 was a very special year for Hermann Hager, also in his personal life. He married Luise Fichtner, who gave birth to the couple’s first child in the following year.

The focal point of Hermann Hager’s world was always his family, with three children and, ultimately, nine grandchildren. He was passionately dedicated to all of them.

Although Hager Group now employs 11,400 people at 22 production sites in 11 countries, the company from Ensheim can justifiably be described as a real family-run business. The commercial approach displayed by the brothers Hermann and Oswald Hager always put people first. Respect for their employees and encouragement of each and every individual were essential elements of their corporate culture right from the start.

Until he stepped down from his position, Hermann Hager, who was shaped by German virtues and influenced by his French lifestyle, always strove to make products better and working processes more accommodating.

The fact that the two brothers were able to share responsibility and place trust in the subsequent generation made the company’s successful generational changeover possible.

Until recently Hermann Hager, the hunting enthusiast and amateur pilot, could still be seen navigating an aircraft through the skies.

But even when he was above the clouds, Hermann remained down-to-earth and always firmly rooted in the Saar region and Alsace. In his home town of Ensheim, as a devout Christian he always got involved in social issues if a helping hand was required. For the most part, quietly and without any fuss, he helped local clubs and other organisations, as well as former employees of the company.
Hermann Hager was also one of the driving forces behind the “Peter-und-Luise-Hager-Stiftung”, a foundation named after his parents which since 2010 has taken up the cause of promoting science and research, education, the arts, culture and social involvement.

Hermann Hager passed away surrounded by his family on 25th March 2014.  As a person and as an entrepreneur, he will always remain indelibly in the memory of his family and those who worked for him.

For those who wish to pay their respects to the family or the company, they may do so at the following e-mail address: in_memory_of@hagergroup.com

Hager Group and ABN Braun AG agree on strategic partnership

Blieskastel, 13th January 2014.

Working together to strengthen outdoor electricity

Wherever electric energy needs to be provided and distributed outdoors, solutions around electric meter pillars, cable distribution cabinets and house main supply units are necessary.

On 20th December 2013 ABN Braun AG and Hager Group agreed on a partnership in the field of outdoor electricity, which should be implemented within the coming weeks.

With this cooperation, Hager intends to take over the development and production for this field at the site in Nuremberg.

The long-term availability of this range for ABN Braun AG and their clients will thus be ensured. ABN will continue to equip this range with their innovative system components of meter board and distribution technology and market it through the specialised multi-channel distribution net-work under the brand name ABN System Geyer.

“Thanks to this cooperation Hager Group is able to complete their portfolio of solutions for the field of outdoor electricity”, says Bertrand Schmitt, member of Hager Group’s Board of Directors. The demand for outdoor applications is increasing in all European countries.

Werner Braun, Chief Executive Officer at ABN Braun AG, himself is pleased with the further strategic enhancement of the medium-sized company. “On the one hand, this partnership with Hager Group, an international company, will notably boost our business area outdoor electricity and on the other hand, our position as an independent family-owned and run company will be maintained.”

This management principle, used at Hager Group’s 20 worldwide production sites, is a pillar of the organisation, its aim being to involve all employees and operators in the process of improvement, encouraging them to be actors in this approach and strengthen the culture of quality within the company.

This event also rewards the best initiatives linked to sustainable development, gathered at Hager Group under the banner of E3 (Ethics, Environment, Energy) with an Eco Award.

This year, each production site proposed at least one project, and for the first time non-industrial sites also participated in the competition. The 13 selected initiatives highlighted in Neunkirchen aim at optimising processes and eliminating non-profit and non-added values tasks. “Continuous improvement is a mind-set in our company, which benefits all our activities”, explains Daniel Hager, Hager Group CEO. “Our continuous improvement initiatives are in line with the needs of the market”, specifies Luis de Leon Chardel, Senior Vice-President Operations Services.

Five teams were rewarded at the 2013 CI Awards. The Gold trophy was awarded to a team at Ottfingen, Germany, which produces wiring accessories, for their systemic approach to improving workflows concerning 6,000 references. The time between a production order and delivery was reduced as well as the optimisation of raw materials. Precious time is lost during each mould change; the optimised process limits time loss as well as dividing by 24 the volume of plastic lost at the beginning of each production phase.

The Silver trophy was awarded to a team at Crolles, France, a site producing wireless alarms and interphone systems, for their work on productivity in the conception and fabrication of smoke detectors. "The growing market encouraged us to develop a third production line alongside the two existing ones," says Francois Peten, Process Engineer at Crolles. "We could avoid investing in a third line thanks to performance improvement of the two existing lines,” he explains.

A team from Annecy in France, a site specialised in the production of electronic cards, received the Bronze Award for its project on production quality for printed and assembled circuit boards. "We focused on three areas: improving the design of the pre-existing cards, modifying processes and adapting the organisation to new control standards," explains Stéphane Faure, in charge of the site. The result: in one year, non-conformity in production was divided by 15, that is to say, practically eradicated.

This year, the trophies not only concern industrial production: the multi-site MES team (Manufacturing Engineering Services) was rewarded with a special trophy, for its codification of electrical components project which involved 6 teams and eleven production sites.

A second special trophy was rewarded to the Brazilian site at Rio de Janeiro. This production site for circuit breakers (with almost 300 employees), acquired by the group in 2007, reduced by 55% the number of complaints for non-compliance and improved productivity for two assembly lines by respectively 20% and 40% thanks to the integration of the Hager Group production methods, Hager Production System HPS.

The Eco Award trophy was awarded to a team from Dongguan in China for the implementation of wood-chip energy instead of fuel in its painting unit. Energy costs for this activity decreased by 70%. “This trophy, awarded for the fourth time, is designed to recognise and reward teams that have led the best projects to reduce the environmental footprint of businesses," says Denis Munch, Sustainable Development Manager at Hager Group. “By making our best practices visible, Eco Awards encourage all sites to copy and reproduce these improvements in their own factories.”

“Continuous improvement allows us to maintain a competitive edge. We see it as a growth strategy, not a cost reduction strategy”, said Daniel Hager, Hager Group CEO, following the ceremony. “The opportunity for us lies in connecting all our efforts across all domains of activity, with a clear focus on both our customers’ needs and ambitions.”

Hager Group: Making our diversity an asset

Blieskastel, 26th November 2013

With employees of 65 different nationalities, Hager Group is a global player dealing with diversity on a daily basis. In 2012, we decided to take this approach even further and formalised our approach to diversity.

"Diversity (n. f. - Latin: diversitas, atis): character which is varied, diverse. Applied to companies, is the variety of human profiles that may exist within (country of origin, region, neighborhood, patronymic, culture, age, gender, physical appearance, disability, sexual orientation, qualifications, etc. ...). "

This definition highlights a reality today: every company is faced with diversity and the challenges it represents. Hager Group has chosen to encourage diversity by seeing it as an advantage. Since its beginnings, the company, which has quickly established itself in different local regions and abroad, seeks to capitalise on this asset.

“Beyond a humanistic approach, we believe that diversity is essential for us to be successful in our various markets. Proper management of diversity at all levels of our organisation and in cooperation with our partner networks is now more than ever a genuine lever to support our business” explains Daniel Hager, Hager Group CEO.

Our diversity approach is part of our E3 sustainable development initiative as well as our ethics charter. This choice led us in 2012 to name a diversity manager to identify and drive a strategy based on four main pillars which now guide the Group's diversity mainstreaming:

  • multicultural lever
  • gender balance
  • disability
  • intergenerational lever

Hager Group is currently developing and rolling out a series of actions in this line with this approach, the idea being to make our employees sensitive to diversity and the lever it can be to support our business. To encourage and support the four main pillars, below are some examples of the various actions in progress:

specific cultural training for better understanding and more efficient working regardless of the origins of the employees. This training has, already helped to educate and train several managers regarding cultural particularities. These managers have now become internal trainers and will continue to deploy this training within the group. China was chosen for this pilot project because this country is now key for our company – in 2013 it entered our top 5 major markets.

parking spaces have been created for pregnant women closer to the entrance of the worksite. Initially set up in Obernai in Spring 2013, this initiative will also be rolled out across the Group to make more comfortable for expectant mothers.

• as part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Hager Group will launch a global action for its employees worldwide, thus encouraging a better understanding of disability.

• a “Forum Séniors” was organised in France in 2011-2012, with the assistance of our social partners to assist employees over the age of 45 dynamise the second stage of their career and encourage them to further develop their employability, motivation and involvement; age diversity being essential to the competitiveness and sustainability of the company.

These specific examples are just a few of the many developed by Hager Group today: the company will set up more than ten concrete actions on the theme of diversity by late 2014.

Shape, function and emotion - Discovering Hager’s design world.

Blieskastel, 14th November 2013

Shape, function and emotion - Discovering Hager’s design world

Hager has been creating standards for the electrical industry for more than five decades. This is most notably mirrored in our product design. "Everything you see and touch highlights the notion of ease and quality” is the way CEO Daniel Hager defines Hager Group's design aspirations. Hager design originated in the early 1960s with the first off-the-shelf enclosure for the German market. Today Hager markets thousands of solution-oriented products which span the complete electro-technical spectrum, ranging from enclosures to switches, trunking to touch panels and from safety components to door phones. Such diversity calls for uniformity combined with a global strategic design approach.

Strategic design management
Whereas in the past it sufficed to design a few key products emphasising functionality, today an inconceivable plethora of heterogeneous products needs to be conceived which are all coherent, recognisable and yet attractive. So as to fulfil this, Hager Group relies on strategic design management, requiring a design manager whose proximity to the company’s products assures knowledge of individual product detail, but who at the same time has an aerial perspective so as to keep track of the complete range. Today this key function is piloted by industrial designer Erwin van Handenhoven who founded the Winco design agency located in Illkirch-Graffenstaden in France close to Strasbourg.

Winco – Hager Group's design agency
The prolific cooperation between Erwin van Handenhoven and Hager began back in 2000. Since then numerous product innovations have Winco's distinctive hallmark. This successful design cooperation has progressed into a new phase: as of July 2013 the design agency was fully integrated into Hager Group. As Winco's Managing Director, Erwin van Handenhoven took on the design management for all future Hager Group developments and every new product will pass through his hands. Besides the physical product design, part of Erwin's mission will be to shape the future as well as embody visionary concepts and, in this way, decisively and influentially advance the evolution of the electro-technical industry. Erwin van Handenhoven puts Hager's attitude towards design in a nutshell when he says "Hager doesn’t want us to create a mask but to give a face to the product."

design.hager.com – the new design website
This current design vision can be explored on design.hager.com. The new site portrays a fascinating journey from the conception of a product idea to the finished commodity. This interface is more than just an information platform as it both involves and inspires the viewer. The onlooker’s eye and hand can set off on voyages of discovery – in a similar way to how real Hager products touch and allure the user with their expressive surfaces, materials or icons. Experience the essence of innovative design attitudes such as Yousability, Sensociety, Geomorganics or Tail-Spirit. And take a look at the design studio with our video of Erwin and his team going about their daily work.

Hager's holistic design aspirations
Alongside pure product design, Hager’s production, sales and marketing processes are all integrated into the design process. Both eco-design and eco-production are as self-evident as eco-friendly packaging design and customer-friendly communications design. This approach towards holistic design comes across on the new site thanks to its attractive cross navigation feature, enabling the inquisitive viewer to either scroll from top to bottom in rapid succession or turn right or left at important intersections. Further information is available in a design book that can be ordered directly on the site or from Hager.

Hager Group lays the first stone of its new Forum

Blieskastel, 18th September 2013

Hager Group lays the first stone of its new Forum

An adventurous day with Hager Group

Blieskastel, 20th August 2013

An adventurous day with Hager Group

Hager Group treats youngsters at SOS Children's Villages to a trip to Europa-Park in Rust

Travelling at 130 km/h on Europe's largest roller coaster.Staying overnight in Camp Resort. Fjord-Rafting on artificial waterways. Full throttle on the WodanTimburcoaster, a wooden roller coaster more than one kilometre long - between 12th and 14th August, Hager Group treated a total of 100 youngsters from SOS Children's Villages in Merzig in Saarland and Eisenberg in Palatinate (Pfalz), to these and many other attractions at Europa-Park in Rust. Together with their carers, the young visitors were accommodated overnight in tepees, before spending an exciting day exploring the roller coasters and rides in the 94-hectre park. "It was a super exciting trip," said Jasmin (6 years old), who lives in the SOS Children's Village Palatinate, "we’d love to go back!"
AnkeAlforaiji, one of the mothers from the Children’s Village in Saarland, confirms that: “…our children were absolutely delighted by the day. Your gift really warmed their hearts, their faces glowed with happiness.”
A third group of children, from the SOS Children's Village in Obernai in Alsace, still have this trip to look forward to. Hager Group will be inviting them to Europa-Park in September.

The idea for this charity event was presented at Hager Group Symposium that took place last December in Europa-Park. After this annual meeting of the family-owned company, the participants, from all over the world, usually go home with a small gift. This year, however, a decision was made to donate the corresponding amount. "Our stay at Europa-Park was really impressive and gave us the idea of offering a similar experience to other individuals, who have fewer opportunities," explained Daniel Hager, the CEO of Hager Group. "As a family-owned company, the concept of family is central to our thinking. We are therefore particularly happy to support SOS Children's Villages, who offer a home to youngsters."

SOS Children's Villages at Saar, Pfalz and Obernai were selected; these three charities are located in the neighbourhood of Hager Group sites. Europa-Park is supporting the action by offering particularly favourable rates for admission, accommodation and catering to the children.

Going on-line with sustainability and the United Nations’ Global Compact

Blieskastel, 25th July 2013

Going on-line with sustainability and the United Nations’ Global Compact

On 26th June 2013 Hager Group went on-line with the 2013 edition of its Communication on Progress report for the United Nations’ Global Compact.

Tara mobile crèches, initiatives to promote diversity, university and internship programmes, Hager Family days, HagerGO! survey, Health Week, ISO certifications, Eco-Awards, Peter-und-Luise-Foundation and zero paper initiatives are just some of the many examples to be found in Hager Group’s 2013 edition of the Communication on Progress report for the United Nations Global Compact illustrating the company’s commitment to employees, customers and the environment. This report has just been published on the United Nations’ website.

It was in April 2007 that Hager Group first signed up to the United Nations Global Compact, the voluntary business initiative supervised by the United Nations to foster Corporate Social Responsibility. Hager Group has an annual responsibility to produce a Communication on Progress report to illustrate its commitment to Global Compact through its business strategies and day-to-day operations.
Each year Hager Group proves through concrete actions that it adheres to the principles of supporting human rights, providing respectable labour conditions, promoting greater environmental responsibility as well as working against corruption in all its forms. The report is an opportunity to highlight the company’s all-encompassing E3 approach to sustainable business in terms of ethics, environment and energy.

With his introductory statement of commitment to the 2013 Communication on Progress report, Daniel Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Hager Group, emphasises that sustainability means progressing in accordance with social, ecological and economic parameters, all three being instrumental in maintaining profitable growth for our company in the long term.

And as you know, all good things come in E-threes

50 years of Franco-German friendship: Hager Group supports the Paris–Berlin Tour

Blieskastel, 25th June 2013

50 years of Franco-German friendship: Hager Group supports the Paris–Berlin Tour

Even 50 years after it was signed, the Franco-German Treaty of Friendship is still keeping the two countries in motion. To celebrate the Élysée-Treaty 50 German and French cyclists will pedal their way from Paris to Berlin. Also taking part will be Hager Group, whose history is intertwined with that of the two countries in a special way.

A historic staging point
The starting point on 29th June for the Paris-Berlin Tour will be Paris. The German embassy marks the first 147-kilometres for the 50 participating cyclists. After cycling through Verdun, Mersch and Metz, they will head for Saarbrücken, where they will be received by Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on 3rd July. The Saarland state premier, is one of the patrons of the binational tour in her function as plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany for cultural affairs within the scope of the Franco-German friendship treaty, together with Valérie Fourneyron, the French minister of sport, youth welfare, cultural affairs, informal education, clubs and societies.

From 1st July onwards, the tour will be accompanied by the traditional Fair Play Tour involving more than 300 participants over five day-long stages. The Fair Play Tour, which has been held for 14 years, is an event in which young people of various nationalities and age groups cycle together through the greater region of Saarland-Lorraine-Luxemburg. Then the tour will continue to Berlin via Traben-Trarbach, Wiesbaden, Fulda, Erfurt, Leipzig, Wittenberg and Brandenburg an der Havel, with the cyclists finally arriving in the capital on 12th July.

1,400 friendly kilometres from Paris to Berlin
1,400 kilometres lie between the two capital cities, so there will be plenty of opportunities to make and intensify friendships, to find out more about the neighbouring country and tell people about one’s own country, to develop team spirit and to master even difficult tour stages with confidence and stamina.

These are precisely the values which also move Hager Group and have led it to support the tour in a variety of ways. In François Peten and Sven Martin, moreover, Hager Group has two employees with a direct involvement in the Franco-German cycling team. While François Peten works as an engineer at the French site in Crolles, Sven Martin is currently participating in the Hager Group’s new trainee programme in Germany. What these two and the other cyclists experience on the tour can be followed on a constantly updated basis on the Internet (see below for link).

The company’s history would have developed along very different lines without the special bond between the French and the Germans. It probably wouldn’t have been such a success. So what could be a more fitting way of celebrating this friendship than to have Hager Group help fill it with life?

A story of Franco-German friendship
When Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle sealed the Franco-German cooperation pact in the Élysée Palace in 1963, two young entrepreneurs were already living out this friendship some 500 kilometres further to the east. The small electrical engineering company that Oswald and Hermann Hager founded with their father in 1955 had roots in both countries from the outset. Now this family-run company, which in the meantime has grown so big that it has a workforce of 11,400, is one of the most important European companies to have become large and successful along with the Franco-German friendship. So it almost goes without saying that Hager Group will accompany the historic cycling tour from Paris to Berlin as a partner.

“The fact that we, as Saarlanders, weren’t totally German and not really French either helped us a great deal from the start,” says Hermann Hager. When the three Hager family members founded their company in Ensheim in Saarland, this region still belonged to France from an economic point of view. Four years later, however, the state was annexed to the Federal Republic of Germany, also in economic terms, following a referendum. In other words, the Hager family transcended boundaries from the start and thereby helped to strengthen the existing bonds between French and German citizens.

France, Germany and beyond
The Hager family had established a branch in France shortly before the borders with Germany were closed. Starting from Obernai in Alsace, the newcomers searched for niches in the established suppliers’ product ranges. “That made us a kind of halfway house between Germany and France and that role suited us just fine, as we were familiar with both sides and were able to conduct ourselves accordingly,” explains Oswald Hager.

As cosmopolitan, inquisitive dialogue partners, the young entrepreneurs were welcome everywhere in the two neighbouring countries. At an early stage they began to invite customers to their Franco-German home region, where they familiarised specialist tradesmen and craftsmen with both the Hager quality standards and the French way of life. As they were running a medium-sized family-owned business, the Hager family naturally shared the thought processes and working methods of their customers. They knew many of the everyday problems faced by small and medium-sized trades businesses from their own experience – and were able to help solve them.

Today Saarland, tomorrow the world
Today, Hager Group is still an independent, owner-run, family-owned company. Its legal form, that of a European Public Company (Societas Europaea, SE) underlines the group’s cultural diversity as well as its Franco-German roots. Hager Group’s traditional innovative power and open-mindedness help it to develop technologies of the future that the company, now as before, works in conjunction with partners – in France, Germany and many other countries across the globe.

Hager Group Health Week - Everyone's a winner! A resounding success

Blieskastel, 21st June 2013

Hager Group Health Week - Everyone's a winner! A resounding success

Hager Group held its first international campaign week on the subject of health and well-being at work and declares it to have been a great success.

Hager Group, recognising the essential role its 11,400 employees play in the group's development, particularly in attaining the objectives set out for 2015, launched its first Health Week, held from 10th-14th June. The aim of this initiative was to raise the entire staff's awareness of the importance of health and well-being through activities and events organised at the company's sites worldwide.

Employees can use the company's exclusive internet platform to participate in the programme online, scoring points for their teams for their daily physical activities. An online competition for the most creative sports photos has also been launched on the website. The big winners will be announced on 10th July 2013.

Although Hager Group has been very committed to the health and well-being of its employees for many years, this group-wide initiative is a first. It has received an overwhelmingly positive response, and according to Franck Houdebert, Group Human Resources Director: "It is extremely encouraging to see the very high level of interest in health and well-being issues at all of our international sites. We all hope to maintain the momentum and enthusiasm triggered this week and continue to share our varied and complementary approaches to these issues with each other."

Many types of events and activities were held over the week focussing on the core components of the Group's Care Management* programme, which include prevention and security, sports, work-life balance and ergonomics. Sporting activities included table tennis and basketball in China, cricket and tug-of-war in India, Tai Chi in the Netherlands, Nordic walking in Poland, running, water zumba and power dumbbell in France and Germany. The employees burned a lot of calories! They could also enjoy fresh fruit baskets and smoothies, get relaxing massages and free cinema tickets and learn about health and nutrition at the many conferences held at the company's sites.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit by the players of the 1.FC Saarbrücken (3rd Division German National League) at the company headquarters in Blieskastel, Germany. The site's employees met the professional players, attended one of their practice sessions and were given advice by some of the players and their coach on physical conditioning and nutrition.

Some sixty employees from France and Germany also participated on 19th June in the "BASF Firmencup 2013" (inter-company race) on the legendary Formula 1 racetrack in Hockenheim. The atmosphere was friendly for the participants who ran a lap around the track, some with running shoes, others with rollerblades, proud to represent Hager Group. From there the festivities continued at the reception area set up especially for the event.

The high level of participation and motivation of the employees from the group's sites worldwide attest to the success of this first Hager Group Health Week. The initiative will be pursued year round through various activities which the Care Management Department will further develop.

“Hager Group Health Week: yes, we care!”

*Care Management aims at raising employees' awareness of health and its direct impact on their daily job as well as developing and implementing measures on topics such as well-being, ergonomics in the workplace and a good work-life balance.

Hager Group reinforces its activity in the field of security-related services

Blieskastel, 29th May 2013

Hager Group reinforces its activity in the field of security-related services

Hager Group evolves continuing to make life easier for its customers and partners, becoming a supplier of services and total solutions.

In line with this corporate strategy, and as part of an asset disposal programme, the group has recently acquired three companies (Teles SA, Prodis, A.V.I. Securité) and one of the business branches of the company Artys.

Teles S.A. is in the domain of remote monitoring operating from two centres in France, in Dijon and in Puget. Prodis distributes products and equipment for security, remote monitoring and video monitoring. Its subsidiary A.V.I. Sécurité specialises in the sale, installation and maintenance of alarm systems. The business branch of Artys taken over by Hager Group is located in Paris, and is supported by a solid network of distributors. These companies and activities represent a turnover of 15 million euros; together they employ about 120 people.

These acquisitions place Hager Group among the top five players in the French remote monitoring market in terms of customer base volume. The group is already present in this market with its brands Daitem and Diagral, its Proxeo network and its remote monitoring centre and production site in Crolles (Isère département, France); these acquisitions reinforce Hager Group’s position in this growing segment by adding new services complementing its current portfolio.

The acquisitions will also enable Hager Group to achieve a better balance in its customer portfolio and gain access to professionals and key accounts. For some years now, the company has been targeting the commercial market in parallel with its main activity, which focuses on the residential sector.

A further aim of this development is to reinforce the group’s position in the field of home automation, through reliable, innovative products and services.

Ideas rewarded for the intelligent use of energy

Blieskastel, 27th March 2013

Ideas rewarded for the intelligent use of energy

Hager Group presents awards to three energy-efficient innovations at the CeBIT trade fair.

tado°, Homee and LightDim were the winners of the first "Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group" awards at the beginning of March, with pioneering solutions for energy-efficient living and working. All three innovations were among the finalists of the CODE_n event, held as part of the Hanover CeBIT trade fair, which was supported by Hager Group as a sponsor and active participant. CODE_n is an important platform in Europe for young companies and fresh ideas from information technology. Founded last year by the entrepreneur Ulrich Dietz (CEO of software company GFT Technologies), this year CODE_n was dedicated to the themes of smart energy and energy efficiency. 250 start-ups from Algeria, the United States, Brazil and 32 other countries applied to participate with their solutions; the top 50 of these were guests in Hannover. The three very best were distinguished by Hager Group with the "Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group" award.

The Gold recognition went to tado°, a system from the Baden-Württemberg software start-up, "Code Atelier". At the heart of their system is the tado° box, which is connected with both the Internet and the heating system, and replaces the thermostat. Via a Smartphone app, tado° gets to know the lifestyle and habits of the residents, analyses these in parallel with local weather data and adjusts the heating power appropriately. According to the calculations of the young team of inventors, a typical family could save almost 300 euros on their annual heating costs using this device.

Homee, in its turn, addresses a problem that currently afflicts many intelligent houses: Namely, the different standards used to control the heating, lighting, air conditioning and security systems. With Homee, platforms such as KNX, Zigbee, EnOcean and Z-wave can now, for the first time, be easily united and coordinated on a single device. An example: If the television is switched on at 20:00 on a Sunday, the heating warms the living room to 20 degrees while radiators in the other rooms allow the temperature to drop. This approach, developed by four former students of the University of Esslingen, was presented the "Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group" silver.

We were led away from the four walls of home and far into the future of Smart Cities by LightDim, an innovation from the Spanish Lightbee Corporation and winner of the "Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group" bronze award. With their control technology for LED-lights, not only street lights but also traffic signs are controlled and dimmed as required. In this way, LightDim reduces not only power consumption and heat generation of the temperature sensitive LEDs, but also extends the lifespan of this high-efficiency lighting.

All three winning teams have been invited to develop their solutions further in the coming months, with innovation teams from Hager Group. In this way the young entrepreneurs will benefit from the experience and market expertise of Hager Group - and the company will benefit from their fresh ideas and approaches. "These days, energy efficiency is very much a question of intelligent IT", says Daniel Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Hager Group. "Hence, a platform such as CODE_n offers us the possibility to find new approaches for more energy-efficient building technology. The three winners of our award are the very best examples of this."

Hager Group, furthering its ambition to be a global player, appoints an internationally experienced top manager

In a period of dynamic expansion, Hager Group has strengthened its management team with an internationally experienced top manager. In appointing Spaniard Luis de León Chardel aged 43, the company has gained an established organisation and production expert, who will support company growth in new market segments. As Senior Vice President Operations Services, starting immediately, de León Chardel is responsible for Global Sourcing, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality and Operational Excellence. He reports directly to Chief Operating Officer (COO), Bertrand Schmitt, and takes over responsibilities of François Lhomme, who is now Senior Vice President Business Group Protection Devices.

The guiding philosophy of Lean Management is to continuously increase the added value for customers, while at the same time reducing waste in the process of value creation. De León Chardel has extensive experience in this approach and is passionate about using his and Hager Group’s know-how and skills to further global growth.

De León Chardel's previous appointments have taken this amateur pilot and father of four to many international locations, his most recent position being in Brussels with the American company Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. His area of responsibility was Supply Chain management for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. De León Chardel consciously chose Hager Group, a European company with long-term goals and aspirations to be a global champion. He expressed his conviction that Hager Group adapts and develops, continuously exceeding customers’ expectations, possessing the ideal prerequisites for global success.

De León Chardel joins Hager Group in a period when it is undergoing fundamental change. From being a leading manufacturer in the electro-technical industry, the Group is currently moving towards being a provider of integrated solutions for diverse customer groups. He wants to promote further development within the Group of the necessary problem solving skills. De León Chardel explains, "For us this means nothing other than to keep building a learning organisation that systematically innovates by leveraging from mistakes, as well as successes."

Sponsorship and start-up recognition from the leading innovator in the electrotechnical sector

Blieskastel, 5th March 2013

Sponsorship and start-up recognition from the leading innovator in the electrotechnical sector

Press conference on 5th March 2013

Hager Group presents itself as one of the most innovative companies in the sector and is a partner in CODE_n. With groundbreaking solutions for electric mobility, energy efficiency and use of renewable energies, this Saarland family business is currently at the cutting edge.

When young contestants get together with developers from Hager Group at the CODE_n event, at first glance this might seem like a meeting of two very different cultures: on the one side young start-up founders, right at the beginning of their careers - and on the other side a company that has enjoyed 58 years of success with a turnover of more than 1.6 billion euros. Nevertheless, the ethos of both sides could not be more similar: both work under high pressure on the development of innovative products and solutions with which, day by day, they are advancing the much-discussed energy revolution. Moreover, just as the start-up entrepreneurs will be presenting completely new approaches to this topic in Hanover, so Hager Group has designated 2013 as its "Year of Innovation". With its experience, market knowledge and close links to wholesalers, installers and end users, in 80 countries around the globe, Hager Group is simultaneously a credible and experienced sparring partner for young entrepreneurs in the field of energy technology.

Great tradition in electrical innovation
If we take the history of Hager Group we can see that it is a continuing series of electrical innovations. At the very beginning of this story stands a novel meter panel, with which the company's two founders, Hermann and Oswald Hager, gained sudden recognition in 1959. Because the Hager-style meter panels were made of plastic instead of steel, they could be mass produced and could be installed by specialised tradesman. Two years later the Hager brothers went one better, with a novel built-in cabinet for meter panels; this replaced the existing, conventional, hand-finished wooden meter cabinets and, within a few years, became the industry standard. So it was that the newcomers converted the disadvantage of being new market entrants into a genuine competitive edge. "Our advantage was that we were different and, moreover, we thought differently from the longestablished manufacturers", explains Dr. Oswald Hager, looking back at this success. As newcomers, the 2 Hager brothers could view the market with completely fresh eyes and devise solutions that the established manufacturers would never have come up with. The name Hager very quickly became a synonym for fresher, simpler and more convincing solutions for electrical installations.

Smart solutions for the world of tomorrow
Innovation has been the essential driving force behind the success that has seen the company grow from 2 to 11,300 employees. The Group's innovative strength is evidenced by more than 1300 patents, as well as reinvestment of more than five percent of the company's turnover, each year, in research and development projects. Around 720 experts, working in worldwide-networked development teams, research innovative products and solutions for electrical building installations. These include solutions for intelligent building technology and ambient assisted living-technologies, electric mobility, energy efficiency and renewable energy. The business is currently developing a flagship project addressing the last three of these issues, which is sure to create a stir across the industry.

The Blieskastel research and development centre is a flagship project for intelligent building efficiency
The location of the project is the Group headquarters in Blieskastel, Saarland, where Hager Group has just built a new administrative and development building. The 3000 square-metre building is, however, much more than just a conventional purpose-built building. When it is connected to the electricity grid in the summer of 2013, the Research and Development Centre will be transformed, in one fell swoop, into a kind of highly efficient power plant. On the roof, 470 solar panels will convert every ray from the sun into electricity, a 30 kW wind turbine will add its contribution and a gas-fired combined heat and power plant will simultaneously contribute both heat and electricity to the building. The majority of this energy, if it is not used immediately, will be stored in bi-directional lithium-ion batteries and only be retrieved when required.

The heart and brain of the Research and Application Centre is a sophisticated energy management system, which will coordinate and control four different energy sources: a solar power plant, wind power plant, combined heat and power plant and power from the electricity grid. Simultaneously, the specially developed management software will integrate a variety of external data, such as current electricity tariffs and weather forecasts (and thus the expected wind and solar power yield), into its models. Finally, it will align all this data with the current and anticipated energy demand. Around 5000 data points, distributed around the entire building, will record and analyse the energy consumption of each individual consumer, in real time, and this will be integrated into the virtual models. The bottom line is that the building should be able to provide 70 percent of its energy requirement for heating, air conditioning and electrical supply, from its own sources.

"This building, because of its size, its energy concept and its degree of self-sufficiency, is unique in Germany," says Andreas Frevel, Solution Support Manager at Hager Group. Equally record-breaking is the economic data from this self-sufficiency project: the entire investment in renewable energy generation and storage should, according to the calculations of the systems engineers, have paid for itself in less than six years. By then, the software and building efficiency should long have been developed to the point where the building is entirely self-sufficient and can be removed from the grid. The Blieskastel Research and Development Centre would then be the clearest proof that energy efficiency today is not primarily a question of technology, but first and foremost a question of intelligence and ideas.

Hager Group recognition for the most promising E_nnovation
In order to encourage innovation, Hager is sponsoring recognition for one of the CODE_n finalists, for the most promising innovation in the energy sector. The team that wins Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group, will continue to develop its business idea together with Hager Group innovation teams, and will receive feedback from experienced R&D experts. For the victorious start-up, this recognition will open up a wide range of opportunities for cooperation and market access. The promotion of ideas is one of the guiding themes of Hager Group, which aligns well with that of the CODE_n event: "E_nergising E_nnovative & sustainable solutions – Co_nnecting markets & partners worldwide."

Awarding Berker design - Berker switch design in the spotlight

Blieskastel, 28th February 2013

Awarding Berker design - Berker switch design in the spotlight

Over the last few months, the new Berker R.1, R.3. and Serie R.classic switch ranges have received a total of 15 awards for design. The Good Design Award, bestowed by the Chicago Athenaeum, the German Design Award (Nominee 2013 + special mention) conferred by the German Design Council and the prestigious iF product design award confirm the quality of Berker product design. Circular switches have been part of the Berker product range since the company was founded in 1919. By winning 15 awards for design within such a short time, Berker has demonstrated yet again its leadership in design expertise as a switch manufacturer.

“The more fast-paced and complex our lives become, the more we long for honest, appealing, contemporary objects; in other words, things that move and touch us today. The excellent Berker R. series products embody these desires.” Emphasises Werner Aisslinger, designer of the award-winning programmes.

This avalanche of awards over recent weeks is also welcomed by Daniel Hager, CEO of Hager Group, which Berker joined in 2010. “Many people have been involved in developing products of such a high standard of design in such a short time. I would like to thank all of them. I am delighted that the new circular switch ranges from Berker, especially the plastic versions, make good design available to everyone at affordable prices.”

Form and function in harmony
Everything began with the new Berker R.1. The soft frame contour combined with a circular centre plate impressed the judges of the Good Design Award in Chicago, as well as those of the iF label product design category and the German Design Council. Due the high quality of participants, for the first time the German Design Council awarded a ‘Special Mention’. This award recognises developments such as the R.1 which feature particularly successful design solutions.

The new Berker R.3 also received numerous accolades. Its appeal lies in the combination of a round centre plate with a bold angular frame. A combination that not only aims to create a visual effect also simplifies its installation in wall trunking systems. The application-oriented design impressed the iF jury, the Good Design experts and The German Design Council.

The Berker Serie R.classic also caught the attention of a design jury, receiving on 22nd Februrary the prestigious « iF gold award » at a ceremony in Munich. In the sub-category « building » of the iF product design award the Serie R.classic is the only design to have been rewarded. Previously, this range won the iF product design award, the Good Design Award and the German Design Award (nominated in 2013) from the German Design Council. With its appealing circular centre plate and striking design featuring a simple toggle, the switch range reinterprets classic round switches and carries tradition into the future in style.

Minimalist operating concepts
However, it was not only the new switch ranges that impressed the jury; the R.1 Touch Sensor KNX and R.3 Touch Sensor KNX room controllers also won important awards (iF product design award, Good Design Award). The R.1 Touch Sensor KNX impressed with its soft contours, simplicity and unusual design. The R.3 Touch Sensor KNX, on the other hand, attracted the jury’s attention with its angular contours and flawless surface. The pared-down, minimalist operating concept of room controllers fits in visually with the Berker R. design switch ranges. The overall aesthetic concept provides the requisite control functions whilst satisfying even the highest of design standards.

The Reddot contest in progress!
Has the tremendous success of the R-Serie come to an end? It’s difficult to say at this point. Indeed, the renowned reddot design Award contest is in progress. You will, of course, be informed of the results…

CODE_n E_nergised by Hager Group

Blieskastel, 27th February 2013

CODE_n E_nergised by Hager Group

Sponsorship and start-up recognition from the leading innovator in the electro-technical sect.

Hager Group's commitment represents the first time that a world-leading company from the electro-technical sector has been involved in the CODE_n-event on the CeBIT fair. The Group, which has its headquarters in Blieskastel in the Saarland, is supporting the ideas competition as a sponsor, as well as with its own recognition for particularly ground-breaking approaches to energy efficiency. In addition, the top management and innovation teams of Hager Group, who develop solutions for the efficient use of energy and distribute them worldwide, will also be represented at Europe's largest competition for start-ups.

As as different as the renowned group of companies (11,300 employees, customers in more than 80 countries worldwide) and the start-ups from CODE_n may appear, in fact, the topics on which both are working are very similar. For example, Hager Group is developing marketable models for intelligent building services, electric mobility, energy efficiency and renewable energy. With its products and solutions, in which intelligent software plays an increasingly important role, the company is noticeably advancing the energy revolution.

At the start-up competition, the two worlds will have many opportunities for cross-fertilisation: Hager Group is interested in the fresh impetus and unconventional approaches offered by start-ups. The young entrepreneurs, in turn, can benefit from the experience, proximity to market and research expertise of a family-owned company that, for the last 60 years, has been bringing energy technology innovations to the market, worldwide. Currently, this includes, for example, powerful storage systems for renewable energies, as well as the pioneering model project of the Hager Group Research and Development Centre in Blieskastel, which is due to be connected to the electricity grid in just a few months time.

You can learn more about these innovations at Hager Group press conference on Tuesday, 5th March, in the Press Lounge (Hall 16). From 12pm, Daniel Hager, Chief Executive Officer of Hager Group, and Johannes Hauck from the company's Corporate Business Development, will be happy to answer your questions about the energy revolution from the perspective of Hager Group. Johannes Hauck will also give a short presentation on the determining success factors for economic and sustainable use of energy in smart buildings. In conjunction, they will both be available for interview. You may also organise individual interviews with them in advance via Claire Freudenberger, Hager Group Corporate Communications Manager.

The following day, the company's Recognition for E_nnovation @ Hager Group will be bestowed for the first time. By so doing, Hager Group will recognise particularly ground-breaking energy efficiency solutions. The winners will be selected by the innovation teams from Hager Group and Daniel Hager, CEO of Hager Group, will personally award them in hall 16 on Wednesday, 6th March at 4pm. Hager Group, leading innovator in the electro-technical industry, will also be represented in the CODE_n Event Area, with its own stand under the motto: "E_nergising E_nnovative & sustainable solutions – Co_nnecting markets & partners worldwide.”

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hager Group intranet among the 10 best intranets in the world

Blieskastel, 16th January 2013

Hager Group intranet among the 10 best intranets in the world

The year has had an excellent start for the communication and collaborative tools of Hager Group. The new version of the intranet launched in May 2012, hagernet2.0, was recently ranked among the ten best intranets in the world. This recognition comes from an authoritative independent research, training and consulting group, the Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g), the principal Dr. Jakob Nielsen participated along with the select committee of experts.

This prestigious distinction, awarded annually since 2001, rewards the work of a cross-disciplinary team of colleagues from various departments and countries. According to Philippe Dennler, project leader and Corporate IT Manager: “the intranet project aims to encourage the development of new ideas, support the internationalisation of Hager Group and simplify employees’ daily work. This is why hagernet2.0 draws some of its inspiration from web 2.0 technologies and why, among other things, it allows real-time construction of networks across international borders for colleagues and projects.”

Nielsen Norman Group made no mistake and these criteria were weighed-up when selecting our intranet: “The designers [of hagernet2.0] opted for clear solutions and optimised the space on the home page, inviting contributors to find out more from their first glance onwards. Moreover, the various sections of the site, including information on colleagues, are easily accessible, allowing employees to work together effectively”, said Jakob Nielsen, Nielsen Norman Group principal and worldwide renowned expert.

The strengths of hagernet2.0 and the story of its genesis are described in the report “Intranet Design Annual 2013: The Year’s 10 Best Intranets” internationally published by Nielsen Norman Group. Hager Group received the NN/g distinction alongside such well-known companies as AT&T and Luzerner Kantonalbank in 2013, joining previous years’ winners such as BASF, Daimler Chrysler, HSBC, Ikea and Wal-Mart.
The company which has built its success on innovation for its customers is now also recognised for its capacity to innovate for its employees.

"iF communication design award 2013" for Hager Group's excellent Annual Report

Blieskastel, December 2012

"iF communication design award 2013" for Hager Group's excellent Annual Report

When the name Hager Group appears on the outside, there's innovation within: For decades this principle has kept the Saarland companyat the forefront of the electrical engineering industry. It was with this approach that the company's Corporate Communications team put together the Annual Report 2011 at the beginning of the year. The result was a product that, of course, took the reader on a journey through the previous year but also presented the highly advanced understanding of innovation of Hager Group.

This spring, the Hager Group "Annual Report" not only appeared in printed form but also, for the first time, in an interactive form for browsers and as an iPad app. The translation of the contents from paper to screen was so well accomplished by the communications experts, that the Annual Report has now won the coveted "iF communication design award 2013".

Full-screen photographs and videos allow anyone who visits the annual report on their browser or iPad to experience the atmosphere which prevailed during the Symposium "Innovation - from products to solutions" in Paris, winter 2011. A Building to Represent Hager Group’s Identity

Blieskastel, October 2012

A Building to Represent Hager Group’s Identity – Sauerbruch Hutton have won the Competition to build the new Hager Group Forum In the Alsatian Town of Obernai

Welcoming and light-flooded, simple and clear: that’s how the jury described Sauerbruch Hutton’s design. The Berlin-based architects have won the competition to build the new Hager Group Forum in the Alsatian town of Obernai. The Group had issued a call for entries in April 2012. The jury came together in July and unanimously voted for the design by the Berlin-based studio: “This concept has impressed the jury with its unpretentious and integrated approach that also perfectly mirrors Hager Group’s identity”, reads the jury statement. After the winner has been found, the project is now introduced to the public.

The project team headed by Evi Hager, Director Corporate Identity at Hager Group, invited six renowned architectural practices to participate in the competition. The jury praised the design of second place winner WandelHöferLorch (Saarbrücken) for its atmospheric intertwining of interior and exterior space. The third place went to LissoniAssociati (Milan) who submitted a concept featuring a two-floor glass building.

Customers and Employees under one Roof
The Berlin-based competition winners Sauerbruch Hutton presented an H-shaped building housing meeting rooms, offices and a café. A generously sized atrium, which can be used for conferences and other events, is created between the different parts of the building. The most striking feature is the large roof that juts out from the building to create a protected central place in front of the Forum. “The roof is meant to draw people into the building but it also creates a space for employees to meet and to enjoy a cup of coffee after lunch”, says architect Matthias Sauerbruch.

Sauerbruch Hutton: Stars in the World of Architecture
With commissioning Sauerbruch Hutton, Hager Group has chosen a studio that has generated a great deal of attention throughout the last few years. The studio’s best-known designs include Museum Brandhorst in Munich, the ADAC headquarters in Munich and the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau. Last year, their new building for KFW Bank in Frankfurt was recognized with the ‘Best Tall Building Worldwide Award’ by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

“What we liked most about Sauerbruch Hutton’s design was the fact that it is just as calm, friendly and authentic as the Hager Group itself”, says Evi Hager. The jurors also liked the energy concept with photovoltaic modules on the roof and an underground cold accumulator.

The construction of the new building is to start as soon as possible. Therefore, together with the Hager project team, the architects will fine-tune and optimize their design by the end of the year. The building application is scheduled to be submitted in January 2013, with the laying of the foundation stone to follow in the summer. Eventually, at the beginning of 2015 at the latest, Hager Group’s largest site will welcome visitors to the new Forum building.

A chance for the professional future: Hager Group and the CJD cooperate in training

Blieskastel, 1st October 2012

A chance for the professional future: Hager Group and the CJD cooperate in training

Whoever opts for logistics training at the vocational training centre of the CJD Homburg/Saar, learns his trade under real-time conditions. Hager Group provides the trainees with two halls on the old Ensheimer factory site and this gives a further example of sustainability at Hager Group: “E3”. The first seven graduates recently completed their training – with excellent results.

The logistics industry has enjoyed an above-average growth in recent years. This is why the vocational training centre of the CJD Homburg/Saar introduced two new trainings: “warehouseman” and “warehouse logistics specialist”. The experience shows that both jobs can be well performed by trainees with physical or psychological limitations.

The CJD could not offer practice rooms for the daily activities of the prospective warehousemen. This is where Hager Group jumped in and provided the trainees of the vocational training centre with two warehouses on premises in Saarbrücken Ensheim. There they now have the ability to work independently. Since the warehouse does not only simulate flows of goods, the trainees, under the supervision of their instructors, supply products for wholesale orders and contribute therefore to help the smooth running of material flow in the factory in Blieskastel.

The cooperation between the CJD and Hager Group for the training of warehousemen and warehouse logistics specialists reflects entirely sustainability at Hager Group (Ethics, Environment, Energy): “E3” is the expression of a corporate identity that combines closely the economic success of the company with the active involvement of its employees.

“If we can fulfil our corporate social responsibility in a win win situation with all partners, that’s great”, says Ulrich Holzer, director at Hager Group, who supervises the project from the start together with Franz Maßfelder, manager of operational logistics in Blieskastel. In practical terms, in the case of the CJD, “E3” means that Hager Group can make a contribution to young people whose first time on the job market is traditionally difficult, by making it possible to access practice-oriented training and thus improve on a sustainable basis the chances of these young people for their 1st job experience. The CJD can in turn offer a training environment to its apprentices that offers more than just a glimpse into real merchandise management. The collaboration also creates a workplace model that is socially and equally efficient. “If one has what the other one needs, that makes the collaboration particularly satisfying”, says Birgit Seggedi, who is responsible for the logistics of Hager Group in Germany and who is equally enthusiastic about the project.

The first results of the collaboration between the CJD and Hager Group prove that the project is successful. From the seven apprentices who completed their training in the summer, one ended with a “Good” and the remaining six obtained a “Very good” mention. The training managers of the CJD attribute these above-average good results to the realism of the training. The CJD and the Hager Group now plan to intensify their collaboration.

About the CJD
The CJD Homburg/Saar GmbH – Youth Vocational Training Centre – one of the 52 vocational training centres (the only one in Saarland) is an organisation for vocational and social rehabilitation. They welcome more than 300 young men with physical, psychological or multiple handicaps and give them initial training in recognised professions. They depend therefore on additional funding and support in order to be able to reach the training maturity that they desire and thus their training goal. The vocational training centres make a significant contribution to the integration of disabled people in the workforce.

Across more than 150 locations - from Rügen to Berchtesgaden, from Dresden to Homburg/Saar – 9,500 CJD employees help 155,000 people every year. The CJD is the largest free, non-governmental and non-denominational committed provider of educational and training facilities in Germany. It is based on the Christian view of humanity and the vision that “No one should be lost!”

Just innovative: the Hager Group Annual Report 2011
Today’s ideas for tomorrow’s growth

Blieskastel, 24. August 2012

Just innovative: the Hager Group Annual Report 2011
Today’s ideas for tomorrow’s growth

It is said that the most reliable way to forecast the future is to invent it, and it is exactly this that Hager Group is intensively working on.
In December 2011 the clearly extended understanding of innovation has been presented at the yearly congress of the managers in Paris. It no longer simply involves classical product innova-tions, but new services, intelligent systems and astute solutions for the customers.

The meaning of this innovative understanding for the company is the theme of the new Annual Report 2011.

It is not just a list of business figures. Under the title “From products to solutions” you will get answers to questions like: How does Hager Group meet the challenges of a complex world? Or: What does “Smart grid” and “Ambient assisted living” mean?

Just as last year, it also contains a “Best of” describing the most important products, events and company news of 2011 – a year with a completely new chapter in Hager Group’s history of inno-vations.

Discover the Annual Report 2011 on your PC or on your iPad - with additional videos, picture galleries and audio experiences.

Hager Group takes majority stake in locate solution GmbH

Blieskastel, 22 May 2012

Hager Group takes majority stake in locate solution GmbH

Hager Group and the former scemtec automation GmbH are to jointly develop system solutions for elderly people as well as for people in need of care and with restricted health conditions.

Anyone born today in Germany will have a life expectancy of up to 30 years higher than people coming into the world 100 years ago. Every second German male today is projected to reach the age of 80 and every second German female should even live to see their 85th birthday. But as the number of elderly people rises, so does the number of people naturally facing age-related restrictions or requiring some kind of nursing care.

It is for this growing section of the population that the Saarland-based Hager Group and the Velbert-based locate solution GmbH will in future be working together to develop intelligent holistic system solutions. Thus, Hager Group again re-affirms its commitment to a strategic growth area within the overall sector of smart building technology.

While Hager Group brings to the new partnership its experience as a leading supplier of intelligent building systems, locate solution GmbH provides widely recognised innovative solutions for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), solutions aimed at easing the everyday life of people in need of help or care and at protecting them from routine mishaps. Martin Reich, managing director at locate solution GmbH, was recently honoured in this field by Langes Leben, a forum concerned with the future. The product LOC.SENS was hailed by Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, a former speaker of the German Bundestag, as "exemplary and progressive technology".
And, in 2011, Bitcom – the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media – conferred on them its Embedded Systems Innovation Award.
In projects such as the ADORHA housing scheme near Strasbourg, Hager Group has already gathered comprehensive experience in terms of health-supportive building technology for disabled or care-dependent residents.

"For many people, we can delay admission into a nursing home in that our technical aids can help to compensate for any physical or age-related limitations they may have", said Daniel Hager, the Hager Group CEO. "Together with locate solution GmbH, we will develop praxis-based and user-friendly AAL technologies that can be evolutionarily integrated into our systems".
"We develop intelligent room, sensor and building systems for innovative nursing processes on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. At locate solution GmbH, all our innovations are tested and developed on the understanding that they make life safer and more mobile and that they maintain and promote the creative independence of the users", confirmed Martin Reich, managing director at locate solution GmbH.

Background
By 2030, no fewer than 22 million people in Germany will be pensioners – about a third more than at present. In surveys recently conducted, two thirds of all German citizens declare that they would prefer to grow old within the comfort of their own four walls. However, only 1.4 per cent of today's houses and apartments are designed to meet senior citizen requirements or barrier-free considerations. In the coming years, then, hundreds of thousands of homes will have to be newly constructed or refitted in order to provide an ageing and care-dependent population with a safe and convenient home environment.

Surveys also show that senior citizens would more than welcome technical assistance systems. If necessary, over a half of 65-year-olds would be happy to rely on technical reminder devices for taking medication and/or on alarm systems such as electronic fall and movement sensors. Indeed, Hager Group already offers for lighting, temperature, shutter and smoke-detector control systems as well as other monitoring applications – i.e. a whole range of solutions with which mobility-impaired people of any age or in need of care can render their everyday chores easier.

The use of electronic assistance systems would not just release pressure on the life of the users but also on family relatives and members of the care professions. At the same time, as the number of people requiring care continues to grow, it is estimated that by 2030 the cost of home care in Germany will increase to €37 billion per annum. "Seen from the economic point of view", says Klaus-Dirk Henke, Professor of Finance & Health Economics at Berlin Technical University, "a longer life at home has distinct benefits".

About locate solution GmbH
locate solution GmbH emerged from scemtec automation GmbH which was founded in 1996. Today, the company ranks as a specialist in the field of state-of-the-art Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions. In addition to providing innovative product and system solutions for the healthcare market, locate solution GmbH's competence is also based on a broad knowledge of social science developments. Furthermore, the company is committed to interdisciplinary research projects as well as actively involved in standards committees and standardisation processes relating to AAL technologies.
