The German footballers Horst Hrubesch and Manfred Kaltz are a legendary example of how a deep mutual understanding can lead to extraordinary successes. In the seventies and eighties the wingback Manni Kaltz would place the ball precisely in front of the skull of the striker Hrubesch (nicknamed ‘the header monster’). The almost intuitive understanding between two completely contrasting footballers led to spectacular finishes. “Manni wing, me head – Goal!” is how Hrubesch described their winning formula, paying tribute to his partner. For in football as everywhere else as well, as the great Uwe Seeler once prosaically said: “There are no goals without the right foundations.”
