Building bridges
Delivering supplies
Berlin Airlift / Berlin, Germany
When the Soviet Union blocked all road and rail access to West Berlin in June 1948, thereby cutting off supply lines to half the city, the Western Allies quickly initiated what is known in German as the Berliner Luftbrücke (Berlin Airbridge). For months, supply aircraft flew in vital supplies until the blockade on the city was finally lifted. This truly shows what a bridge can represent: a path to freedom.
