Building bridges

Overcoming obstacles

Devil’s Bridge / Schöllenen Gorge, Switzerland

For centuries, the wild Schöllenen Gorge has been a difficult obstacle on the route across the Gotthard Pass connecting the cantons of Uri and Ticino. Legend has it that the first bridge was constructed by the Devil himself, but it was actually built by the Walser people. They completed the masterpiece in around 1230 and it was the first wooden bridge over the River Reuss. A stone bridge followed nearly 600 years later and a two-lane bridge over the River Reuss was built in 1958. The Devil, however, had no involvement in the project.
