Intercultural summer camp at Spohns Haus

50 young people spend first weeks of the holidays in Saarland

Fostering traditions: intercultural summer camp

The summer camp at the “Spohns Haus Ecological School Camp”, organised by the Peter und Luise Hager Foundation, is considered Germany’s biggest youth exchange project between Poland, Ukraine and Germany. Held for the 13th time this year and organised by the foundation for the seventh time, the camp has now become a real tradition for many boys and girls whose parents are employed at the Hager Group. Many of the young people come back year after year to the camp in Gersheim near Saarbrücken during the school holidays. They can look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces and having a great time together near the French border. This year, there were roughly 50 participants.

A special summer holiday programme

For the Peter und Luise Hager Foundation, it is important to give the young participants the opportunity to come into contact with many different cultures at a young age. To find out more about the customs and possibly also the special features of the other culture in a fun way. And maybe even to develop their own skills in a language course.

From early to mid July 2019, the 13- to 18-year-olds had the chance to share many different experiences. The programme included a graffiti workshop with an artist and day trips to Heidelberg and Paris. And of course the camp wouldn’t be complete without a look behind the scenes of the company where Mum and/or Dad work. So a tour of the plant at the Blieskastel site was held, after which the young people could potter about in the training workshop with the apprentices and let off steam in the Homburg adventure park. The day was rounded off with a joint barbecue.

The camp is also to be held again next year. The exact dates will be announced on the website of the Peter und Luise Hager Foundation during the winter. The employees of the Peter und Luise Hager Foundation hope to receive lots of applications in order to keep fostering this tradition. Support from the foundation keeps the participation fee low: accommodation, food, care, trips and workshops are all included in the price.
