The Nant de Drance pumped-storage power station in the Swiss Alps uses gravity to generate and store natural energy. During peak consumption periods, the water stored in the Vieux Emosson reservoir is directed into the subterranean power station to the turbines by means of two 425 metre-high vertical shafts, and thus generates electricity. If there is low demand for electricity or excess renewable energy has been produced, the water is instead pumped out of the lake Lac d’Emosson back into the Vieux Emosson reservoir. This allows energy to be stored until it is required. Unimes H energy distribution systems from Hager ensure that it flows without hindrance.
