A Building to Represent Hager Group’s Identity

Welcoming and light-flooded, simple and clear: that’s how the jury described Sauerbruch Hutton’s design. The Berlin-based architects have won the competition to build the new Hager Group Forum in the Alsatian town of Obernai. The Group had issued a call for entries in April 2012. The jury came together in July and unanimously voted for the design by the Berlin-based studio: “This concept has impressed the jury with its unpretentious and integrated approach that also perfectly mirrors Hager Group’s identity”, reads the jury statement. After the winner has been found, the project is now introduced to the public.

The project team headed by Evi Hager, Director Corporate Identity at Hager Group, invited six renowned architectural practices to participate in the competition. The jury praised the design of second place winner WandelHöferLorch (Saarbrücken) for its atmospheric intertwining of interior and exterior space. The third place went to LissoniAssociati (Milan) who submitted a concept featuring a two-floor glass building.

Customers and Employees under one Roof

The Berlin-based competition winners Sauerbruch Hutton presented an H-shaped building housing meeting rooms, offices and a café. A generously sized atrium, which can be used for conferences and other events, is created between the different parts of the building. The most striking feature is the large roof that juts out from the building to create a protected central place in front of the Forum. “The roof is meant to draw people into the building but it also creates a space for employees to meet and to enjoy a cup of coffee after lunch”, says architect Matthias Sauerbruch.

Sauerbruch Hutton: Stars in the World of Architecture

With commissioning Sauerbruch Hutton, Hager Group has chosen a studio that has generated a great deal of attention throughout the last few years. The studio’s best-known designs include Museum Brandhorst in Munich, the ADAC headquarters in Munich and the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau. Last year, their new building for KFW Bank in Frankfurt was recognized with the ‘Best Tall Building Worldwide Award’ by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

“What we liked most about Sauerbruch Hutton’s design was the fact that it is just as calm, friendly and authentic as the Hager Group itself”, says Evi Hager. The jurors also liked the energy concept with photovoltaic modules on the roof and an underground cold accumulator.

The construction of the new building is to start as soon as possible. Therefore, together with the Hager project team, the architects will fine-tune and optimize their design by the end of the year. The building application is scheduled to be submitted in January 2013, with the laying of the foundation stone to follow in the summer. Eventually, at the beginning of 2015 at the latest, Hager Group’s largest site will welcome visitors to the new Forum building.
