Ameron Hotel**** (Hamburg)

A visit to the AMERON Hotel Speicherstadt Hamburg:
outstanding technology for a unique hotel

It’s a building that’s second to none: in the unique setting of Hamburg’s warehouse district (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015), the AMERON group has converted a former commercial building into an exquisite designer hotel. The seven-storey building dates back to the 1950s and was originally designed by the Hamburg-based star architect Werner Kallmorgen. Now it is a perfect example of how to successfully update an historic building. For two years the property – a listed building – was carefully modernised and renovated, before being given a new lease of life as a four-star hotel. The very first ‘permanent guests’ included the brands Hager and Berker.

“Choosing Berker as a partner was a very deliberate decision” says Cord Glantz from GEPLAN Design, the company responsible for designing the interiors at the AMERON Hotel Speicherstadt Hamburg. “I like the brand’s great design – which is always being further developed – I also like the engineers’ clever technical solutions.”

The architects selected the switch series Berker Q.3 anthracite and Berker Q.1 in soft white for the rooms. In the meeting rooms, Berker Q.1 KNX and Hager underfloor ducts were installed.

Berker was the only company able to provide a switch series that could be adapted so well to the dark timber cladding used in the hotel, explains Mr. Glantz. This aspect was extremely important to the planners, since the luxurious wood panelling covers the entire rear wall of each room, creating a very calm, monochrome and high-end effect. “Thanks to the solutions by Hager and Berker, it worked really well,” explains Glantz.

The hotel has been very popular with guests since it opened, which suggests that they agree. The hotel’s rooms and suites feature open-plan bathrooms and 1950s and 60s design. The hall of the former Coffee Exchange, where raw goods from all around the world used to be traded, is now a conference room. And there is a further highlight for hotel guests on the seventh floor of the building: those who use the spa area, with its roof terrace and gym, can enjoy an unobstructed view of a second architectural masterpiece: the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
