Green power plant for the home
With its high-performance Energy Management and Storage System (EMSS), Hager is now entering into the business segment of private electricity generation. In the future, Hager EMSS will allow homeowners to store and manage the energy harnessed by solar installations instead of having to feed it back in to the public grid for a small fee, as was previously the case. EMSS works with the latest generation of lithium-ion batteries and boasts an efficiency of up to 95 per cent as well as noticeable improvements in comparison with traditional storage systems. As a combined energy management and storage system, it allows homeowners to utilise the regenerative energy collected from the roofs of their homes in the most efficient way of all: for themselves.
(* In Germany, the home owner gets 0.12€ per kWh back for a purchase price of 0.28€. In France, electricity can be sold back at 0.23€, this is particularly advantageous as the purchase price is 0.14€. Moreover, the cost per kWh in France is the lowest in Europe. However this situation is changing an in the coming years it will also be advantageous to consume one’s own electricity).
Making maximum use of the energy generated in homes
"Private households without their own energy management and storage system can use a maximum of 20 per cent of the electricity they have generated," explains Torsten Hager, the man responsible for the project at Hager. On sunny days when their installations are being utilised to full capacity, homeowners must feed any excess electricity into the power grid according to the compensation rates set out in the EEG (Renewable Energies Act), i.e. for low amounts. On the other hand, if local production is insufficient to cover the needs of the building, the difference will be provided by the network. In Germany, the law on renewable energies (EEG) defines the selling and purchase price from the electricity grid. The sale price is 2.5 times lower than the purchase price, which strongly motivates people to consume their own electricity. With Hager EMSS, however, they can use between 70 and 80 per cent of the energy they generate themselves. Hager EMSS thus presents considerable progress for ecological energy generation and offers predictable electricity costs as well as the greatest possible degree of independence from conventional energies.
Innovative storage system with numerous advantages
The cost-effectiveness of investing in a green power installation for homeowners depends on the location in question, the customisation of the system and the electricity price trends. "On average, an installation of this kind tends to pay for itself after just a dozen years or so," says Achim Jager of Hager Bertriebsgesellschaft.
"But Hager EMSS could be a future-oriented investment from the very first day for anyone looking to be as self-sufficient as possible when it comes to their clean energy supply."
A set of high-performance lithium-ion batteries from the car industry is the heart of the Hager EMSS. A storage capacity of between 2.3 and 9.2 kWh can be installed depending on the desired size of the system. Hager offers a full value replacement warranty of 10 years for the battery cells.
The system's intelligence comes from an energy management software system that was developed in-house by Hager. The software has proved its worth in major projects such as the German Pavilion at the EXPO 2015 in Milan and the Hager research and application centre in Blieskastel, a commercial version for residential buildings is now available.
The energy generated can be connected to alternating and direct current or fed in using a combination of both modes. This means owners of existing solar installations can easily connect their old installation in alternating current mode without the need for any rewiring of the electrical installation.
On the other hand, it also suits customers who want to add a new solar installation or expanding their existing one as it can be connected directly onto the DC side, thus saving on the need for an inverter. Torsten Hager: "As far as we know, only Hager EMSS offers this degree of flexibility."
The brain of Hager EMSS – the so-called energy management gateway – is installed in the metering board. The system is thus already equipped for smart energy management using intelligent measuring systems that will be available throughout Germany from 2017.
With EMSS, homeowners can rely on an innovative system from an extremely reliable manufacturer. Hager is one of the leading European providers of electrical installation systems, boasting an extensive service network and over 60 years of experience.
Hager Energy Management and Storage System will be presented at Light + Building fair 2016 in Frankfurt from 13th to 18th March 2016.
