17 customised panels for Madagascar (Madagascar)

International team
This large project was designed and quoted by our industrial specialists at Hager Obernai. In order to have the best cost efficiency panel, the project was designed in France, wired in South Africa (by panel builders Isazi) and then sent back to the site in Madagascar. Products came from France for the enclosures and devices but all main MCCBs arrived from China.

Safe and simple, intuitive design
The 17-tier back-to-back panel was designed by Hager using the quadro+ system. This allows for the intuitive design of large-scale distribution systems, resulting in complete solutions that are fast, simple and safe to build. The quadro+ system allows panel builders to select from a range of enclosures and protection devices for the application at hand, while the hagercad software simplifies the planning and design.

Big challenges
This was a first ‘big win’ for our partners in Madagascar, Master Trade. As soon as the project was ordered Covid arrived - big delays! When it came time to place the main panel (2x 12m long) on the first floor, it turned out to be too heavy so the entire floor had to be reinforced before hoisting the panel up. Construction of the frames commenced in May during a hard Covid lockdown with EM supplying all of the necessary components at a later stage. In total, it took about three months to complete the entire project. The 17-tier panel was dismantled into four sections for easy transportation.

Breaking new ground - winning new friends
Product Manager Christo van Rensburg from suppliers ElectroMechanica (EM) commented that Hager is normally associated with commercial installations like building automation. He told us:

“This is an important project for us as it represents a foot in the door of the lucrative oil and gas industry in Africa. It also showcases the applicability of Hager to realise large industrial-type installations.” Mias Delport of Isazi Energy Holdings said that EM collaborated with the panel builder due to their capability to undertake such a large-scale, one-off project, adding: “This is an exciting project not only for us but for the technical and manufacturing capability of South African industry as a whole.”
