#speed202 – a complete success! 203.275 km/h - Edmond Plawczyk sets record with support from Hager

On Friday, 3rd April 2015, Edmond Plawczyk reached a speed of 203.275 km/h in speed snowboarding, smashing the previous record of 201 km/h. The record-breaking attempt took place on the famous Chabrières piste in the French Alps, as part of the Vars Speed Challenge. 43-year-old Frenchman Edmond Plawczyk originally set the world record in 1997, before it was broken by Australian Darren Powell, who held the title for 12 years. Edmond Plawczyk has now reclaimed the title for himself. “I’m thrilled that I’ve achieved – or rather surpassed – my goal. Those few decisive seconds were actually the culmination of several years’ hard work by a whole team of people and I’d like to thank them all, especially my wife, family, technical team and partner. I couldn’t have broken the record without them,” said a jubilant Edmond Plawczyk.

On Friday, 3rd April at 1.30 p.m. Edmond Plawczyk assumed the position for his record attempt at the top of a 1,400-metre-long natural couloir, which had been cordoned off especially for the event. According to a signpost, the maximum gradient was 98 per cent. The weather conditions are average, there has been a constant wind for several days, and ice is now forming on some parts of the slope. As an experienced skier, Edmond waits patiently, looking for the best slot. Finally, the wind dies down, the snows seems softer, now is the time!  An historic moment where Edmond Plawczyk accelerates from 0 to 200 km in less than 7 seconds and secures the new world record after a further 435 metres of undulating terrain. This officially makes him the world’s fastest snowboarder, with more acceleration than a Ferrari!

The secret to Edmond Plawczyk’s success
This wasn’t the first time Edmond Plawczyk had tried to win back his title. An amateur snowboarder with plenty of experience, he made a first attempt to set a new record in Verbier in 2013 but his sub-par equipment slowed him down. For today’s historic attempt he rode a made-to-measure board, wore an aerodynamic racing suit and helmet and was well prepared thanks to a special training programme conducted indoors and in a wind tunnel.

Hager: Edmond Plawczyk’s exclusive partner
This time around Edmond Plawczyk had a further advantage: a new partner. The family-run company Hager, a leading supplier of solutions for electrical installations, was his sole sponsor for this record-breaking attempt. Thanks to this rather unexpected partnership, based on shared values, the snowboarder can now tackle new challenges, safe in the knowledge that he has Hager’s support. The story behind the partnership has already been reported on several social networks – #speed202 and on Hager Group’s website: www.hagergroup.com/speed202.
