From waste to design: Hager Group is turning plastic waste into stylish tech

27 February 2024

Explore Hager Group's journey towards sustainability with cubyko leaf, a new series of switches and sockets made with ocean-bound plastic.

In February 2024, Hager Group made its first step toward a more sustainable product range:

With the brand Hager in France leading the way, the group unveiled a new series of switches and sockets, which includes at least 27% ocean bound plastic. cubyko leaf marks Hager Group's first product line explicitly crafted to promote a circular economy. This innovative product line represents the company's commitment to environmental stewardship by reducing environmental waste and preventing plastic from reaching our oceans. "The switches and that we market under the name of cubyko leaf in France, uphold the high standards of functionality and quality our customers expect, enriched with sustainable benefits," explains Julien Mantelet, Group Product Manager at Hager Group.

The product range boasts:

  • 27-32% recycled ocean-bound plastic,
  • reduced CO2 emissions by at least 3% compared to the conventional product series,
  • decreased fossil fuel consumption by at least 10% throughout the process compared to the conventional product series,
  • Each switch prevents the equivalent of one and a halve 1.5l plastic bottles from entering the ocean.

The introduction of cubyko leaf, realized through a strategic collaboration with supplier Avient and the global initiative Plastic Bank, marks the beginning of a broader roll-out planned for 2024, aiming to offer this eco-conscious product in more markets.

A Strong Commitment to Sustainability

Hager Group is dedicated to making people’s life on the planet safer, cleaner and more enjoyable by shaping the electrical world of tomorrow. Amongst other things, this entails products that help its customers to manage the energy transition, reduce energy consumption and CO2. But it also means looking into the lifecycle of our products and their design. “EcoDesign plays an increasingly important role in product design - not only for us. The introduction of cubyko leaf is a milestone in our sustainability journey proving that environmental sustainability can become a differentiating business factor," commented Matthieu Alexandropulos, CSR Director at Hager Group.

The introduction of this product is an extension of Hager Group’s partnership efforts to conserve the ocean. Since 2021, the Group has been supporting the French sailor Fabrice Amadeo. Just like Hager Group, he is dedicated to environmental protection. His focus is on fighting plastic pollution. He uses his sailing adventures to collect data for scientists to better understand the impact of global warming on the ocean. His key objective for the next Vendée Globe race is to sail around the world using renewable energies only. In the last race, he already crossed the Atlantic Ocean without any fossil fuel use.
