BlueFuture Project - clean drinking water for Tanzania

The Peter and Luise Hager Foundation is committed to a project in Tanzania that provides lasting aid. At its roots are friends Tibor Sprick and Christoph Dillenburger who are in the habit of discussing social and global challenges. One recurring question was why the substantial amounts of money being donated to Africa every year do not seem to make a difference in easing poverty.

They set out to conceive an aid programme which would make a real difference, so they started off by talking to experts from the continent. It soon became apparent that lasting solutions require investment in people and infrastructure. With this in mind, they conceived the BlueFuture Project and succeeded in providing clean drinking water to Tanzanian communities on a long-term basis - a big step forward that also creates jobs.

One of the project partners is Dr. Askwar Hilonga, an award-winning Tanzanian chemical engineer whose work includes an innovative water filtration system based on nanofilters. These filters can be adapted to local water contamination which is immensely important as each affected source in Tanzania is contaminated by different agents. With a local team, the BlueFuture Project sets up individual filters and helps with maintenance. The real "entrepreneur" of the small water station, however, is a community member who can "produce" and sell the drinking water - at a price up to eight times cheaper than any other offering in Tanzania.

The strategy creates small businesses, jobs and opportunities for local people while securing a sustainable water supply. With their water station, the community member generates an income that is usually well above the average in Tanzania. The Peter and Luise Hager Foundation is happy to support such projects, which contribute to a noticeable improvement of the world on several levels.
